DeVos, Slade, Bonstell, VanZalen, Namey and Kleis win Features Meeuwsen, Wiersma, Tillema, VanZalen and J. DeVos named 2008 Champions
Marne, MI-- Berlin Raceway saw five champions crowned on Saturday night as points battles came to an end for the 2008 season on Championship Night. Ross Meeuwsen, Brian Wiersma, Brian Tillema, Brian VanZalen and Jason DeVos all clinched the 2008 championships in their respective divisions tonight. In the feature races, Tim DeVos, Josh Slade, Nick Bonstell, Brian VanZalen, Paul Namey and Ben Kleis took home the trophies.
The cars of #2 Shawn Simon and #6 Terry Bockheim started Championship Night off by bringing the Instant Cash Advance Sportsman field to the green flag. Bockheim took the lead on lap 2 and the field was mostly single-file. After getting fast time earlier in the day and then wrecking in a heat race and fixing extensive damage on his truck, #44 Brian VanZalen was on the move; on lap 6 he took second from Simon and on lap 7, he was leading the race. VanZalen had stretched out his lead by lap 13 and the battle was for second between Bockheim and Simon. Simon took second on lap 14 and began to cut into VanZalen's lead, but ran out of time. VanZalen went on to get his seventh win of the season and win the Instant Cash Advance Sportsman Championship. Simon, Bockheim, #48 Brandon Wright, #38 Maurice Davis, #88 Tony Davis, #67 Mike Welch, #00 Dennis Mann, #22 Ken Roelofs and #89 Kirk Meissner were the rest of the top ten.
The De-Jay Slick Truck Pro Stocks rolled next with #11 Nick Bonstell and #80 Jason Hoogerhyde on the front row. Bonstell established himself as the leader early and the first battle for position was for fourth between #20 Dave Hull and #50 Justin Regnerus. Hoogerhyde and #36 Ken Smith were also battling for second; Smith took it on lap 7. Bonstell was pulling away as the rest of the field were jockeying for position. The battle for third ended in the first caution of the night; contact between Hoogerhyde and Regnerus on Lap 23 saw Regnerus spinning on the frontstretch. Bonstell’s lead was erased and that put Smith right on his bumper. The two had a great battle for the lead, but Bonstell was able to hold Smith off to get his fourth win of the season. The rest of the top ten were Hoogerhyde, #76 Ryan Gruppen, #76 Brian Tillema, #17 Ryan Meldrum, #15 Scott Root, #15 Garison Jewett, #51 Weston Jewett and Hill. Tillema earned back-to-back De-Jay Slick Truck Pro Stock Championships.
In the Coors Light Late Model feature, #8 Dakota Carlson started on the pole with #55 Chris Anthony on his outside. Carlson took the lead early, but Anthony was reeling him in and he brought #32 Ross Meeuwsen with him. On lap 10, Meeuwsen used the outside lane to get past Anthony and two laps later, he was leading the race when he overtook Carlson. #12 Tim DeVos was working his way through the field, making his was up to third by the time the first caution came out on lap 19 for the #15 of Brian Maxim. On the restart, DeVos continued his attack, but damaged his car in the process when he made contact with Anthony. DeVos grabbed the lead form Meeuwsen on the restart after the second caution involving #25 Ted Omlor, #65 Todd Dougherty and #4 Joel Baker. Meeuwsen didn’t let DeVos out of his sight, as he was battling back. Lap 38 saw the final caution of the night for #88 Tim Yonker, #21 Terry VanHaitsma and Omlor and on the restart, DeVos got a great jump and drove away from the field. Devos got his first win of the season by 1.213 seconds over Coors Light Late Model Champion Ross Meeuwsen. The rest of the top ten were #82 Tom Thomas, #222 Caleb Bisacky, #61 John Grega, #28 Scott Thomas, #27 Billy Shotko, #1 Randy Sweet, #11 Leroy Magoon and Yonker.
The Engine Pro Super Stocks were next and #55 Dave Lake and #12 Josh Slade brought the field to the stripe. The two stayed in a side-by-side battle for the lead for five laps and that’s when Slade took the lead. Caution was out early in this race, the first on lap five for contact between #3ish Travis Nylaan and #1 Brian Wiersma. Lake was right on Slade’s bumper on the restart, but Slade was able to pull away and by the next lap, all cars were single-file. #5 Cal Castle and #71 Kyle Ballard brought out the second caution of the night after contact in turn three resulted in a flat tire for Ballard. Slade continued to lead, but Lake and #10 Bob Spencer were not far behind. Contact between Slade and Lake resulted in Lake spinning on the backstretch which brought out the final caution of the night. #18 Denny Anderson had worked his way up to second and gave Slade a run for his money, but with five laps to go, Anderson was under attack by Spencer and #13 James Haney and that allowed Slade to pull away and get his first win in the Super Stock division. The rest of the top ten were Anderson, Haney, Spencer, Wiersma, #98 Bob Bliss, #8 Billy Eppink, #3ish Travis Nylaan, #F1 Randy Veldman and #10 Cal Castle. In addition to scoring a top five, Wiersma got his fifth Engine Pro Super Stock Championship.
The Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinders were the final features of the night. #9 Nick Curtis and #5 Brian Scheid were on the front row of the A feature and there was tight racing throughout the field form the drop of the green flag. By lap 5, #14 Jason DeVos had passed Maley for the lead and began to pull away as the rest of the field raced side-by-side. #11 Skeeter Jacobson brought out the first caution of the night when he spun in turn 4. After taking the green flag in 13th, #74 Paul Namey was on the move and made a last lap pass for the lead. As Namey took the checkered flag, #100 Jason Scheid and #7 Jake Loesch made contact and Scheid slid across the start/finish line in third. The rest of the top ten were Loesch, Curtis, #7 Ryan Hamm, #354 Chris McKinley, Maley, #15 Brad Hastings and #07 Jason Emanouil. #11 Brian Gregerson and #1 Brett DeKraker were on the front row of the B feature and the cars were wrecking before they got to turn one. After a complete restart, DeKraker took the lead and he and #97 Jeff Loesch broke away from the pack. #19 Ben Kleis, who had started 15th, made his way up to fourth by lap six and three laps later, he took the lead from DeKraker. Kleis went on to get his second win in as many weeks and the top five included #77 Gerry Shepard, #88 Mike Speet, DeKraker and Loesch. Jason DeVos claimed the 2008 Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder Championship.
Priority Mortgage Fireworks put a cap on the 2008 season as the five champions celebrated on the frontstretch.

Whitecaps reach tentative agreement to sell Berlin racing operation MARNE, MI -- Whitecaps Racing Development and Mike Blackmer jointly announced today that the two parties have reached a tentative agreement to sell the racing operation to Blackmer, subject to Berlin Fairboard approval. Blackmer has signed a letter of intent to take over the racing operation of the historic track beginning in 2009. Blackmer is a co-owner of Boyne Machine Company in Jenison and has been owner of the largest race team at Berlin Raceway with seven drivers in his stable, including 10-time track champion Fred Campbell, Brian Campbell and Terry Van Haitsma in the Coors Light Late Model division; Andrew and Travis Nylaan in the Engine Pro Super Stock division, and Jason Hoogerhyde and Ryan Meldrum in the De-Jay Slick Truck Pro Stock division. He is also owner of Brian Campbell's ASA race team. Blackmer plans to sell his race teams and equipment in order to move into this new venture of track ownership. Blackmer has a long history at Berlin Raceway; he began attending as a fan back in 1987 when he moved to Grand Rapids at the age of 25. He raced in the Sportsman division in 1990 and 1991, finishing as high as 24th in Sportsman "A" points in 1991 (one position ahead of current Late Model great Tim DeVos), but soon realized that driving race cars wasn't for him. He joined Rusty Parker's Late Model crew in 1991 and continued to work with that team through the 2001 season, when Parker retired from racing as a driver. In 1994, Blackmer and Parker purchased Boyne Machine Company, and along with Rusty's brother Randy Parker, still own and operate that business today. Boyne Machine specializes in CNC milling and turning and is a top source of precision machining. He built his first race team in 2003 with Andrew Nylaan as driver in the Sportsman division, and within two years had built the largest multi-team stable at Berlin. The Whitecaps purchased Berlin Raceway from the Mysliwiec family, original operators of the track that was founded in 1951, following the 2000 season. Since then the Whitecaps have invested millions of dollars on the track infrastructure, including building new restrooms, a new sound system, new private party areas, new catch fence and outside wall for safety and other amenities to make Berlin Raceway not only the premier facility in the Midwest, but also the most fan-friendly. Per the signed letter of intent, Whitecaps Racing will continue to manage the concessions and souvenir operations at Berlin Raceway on behalf of new owner Blackmer, who can then concentrate on the racing operations. Scott Lane, president of Whitecaps Racing Development and Whitecaps Professional Baseball, said the move is a good fit for both the Whitecaps and Blackmer. "We've come to realize that someone like Mike Blackmer, who has a thorough understanding of and passion for the sport of short track racing as well as a strong business background, will be able to run the racing operation more efficiently than us," Lane said. "Our administrative overhead is prohibitive to managing the racing end of the business in an efficient manner. Our forte is fan service in regards to food & beverage and souvenirs, and we're happy to provide this for Mike under the terms of the agreement." Blackmer said owning Berlin Raceway is something he’s been wanting for years. "Berlin has a great history as one of the most successful short tracks in the country," Blackmer said. "I've been a regular here for 25 years and I have a passion for this place. I was one of the bidders attempting to purchase it back in 2001 when the Whitecaps won the bid, and now the opportunity has come along again for me to purchase the racing business. I'll be taking over a very successful track, one that does not need to be rebuilt from the ground up because it’s already established as one of the best in the business. My job will be to keep the track going strong and to continue to change with the times. "Lew (Chamberlin, CEO of Whitecaps Baseball and Whitecaps Racing) has admitted that the Whitecaps lacked experience in the racing business when they took the track over in 2001, but I believe that I do know this business and it fits me perfectly. This is a great opportunity for me, and I'm happy to have my partners at Boyne Machine, Rusty and Randy Parker, supporting me in this new venture."
