Do you want to experience the thrill of racing and great competition when motor sports is typically dormant? Have you ever thought, "I could drive a racecar better than that guy?" Now you have a chance to prove it. You are cordially invited to join us at the DeltaPlex in Grand Rapids as we welcome NASCAR team owner and Arena Racing USA partner Joe Gibbs.
"Norm Miller (Interstate Batteries), saw this concept and loved it. He sold his vision of Arena Racing to me, and Im a firm believer in it. It provides great competition when motorsports is typically dormant. Plus, its a cost-effective way to get started in racing." JOE GIBBS--OWNER OF JOE GIBBS RACING AND HEAD COACH OF THE NFLS WASHINGTON REDSKINS Arena Racing USA Fast Facts "Ive raced midgets and sprint cars indoors and theres definitely an added level of excitement. When I found out you could do the same thing with a halfscale stock car, but on a banked track with 14 other cars around you while making laps in under 10 seconds, I was in." "Just like Tony (Stewart), I raced midgets and sprint cars in arenas during my USAC days. And hes right, its a cool experience. Plus, you really hone your skills because theres not much room for error." "I drove in the Arena Racing series a few years ago in Norfolk. I won a few features and also met Dale (Earnhardt) Jr. there. It was awesome...I'm pretty happy to be a part of bringing Arena Racing to Grand Rapids. It'll give others the opportunity to either begin their racing careers or just have the time of their lives." #11 Denny Hamlin #18 J.J. Yeley #20 Tony Stewart Arena Racing cars are: One-half the size of NASCAR stock cars 9 feet long 36 inches high (from track to roof) Capable of speeds up to 100 mph Approximately 725 lbs. (including racer) Fit with custom steering wheels, racing seats and pedals to fit each racer They are equipped with: NASCAR-style stock car bodies 13-horsepower, rear-mounted Honda Engines 1.5-gallon fuel cells Adjustable upper and lower A-frames 5-point harnesses Steel roll cages Coil-over suspensions Disc brakes Rack-and-pinion steering Adjustable rear track bars Aluminum racing seats Other Car Facts: Drivers enter and exit the cars through a sunroof-sized opening in the roofs of the cars. Due to the multiple-heat racing format, drivers do not need to pit during races. Teams are allowed to customize only set-up related items such as: caster/camber, toe-in, tire stagger, track bar adjustments, coil-over springs and shocks, lead location and bite. These are adjustments to a car's handling, and are done the same way you see professional pit crews do it on the NASCAR circuits. Arena Racing cars are real, one-half scale stock cars. Every car must meet the exact same league specifications to ensure that the action on the track is the result of good driving skills, not a mechanical advantage. If you ever wanted to be involved in competitive auto racing, this may be your chance. ARE YOU READY ?? A NEW IDEA IS ABOUT TO SPROUT IN THE WEST MICHIGAN RACING SCENE. Arena Racing well it might be good. The cost will be higher than us. Go-Karts 25.00 plus a buffet, season 150.00 how awesome. Way to go Mark for putting something so simple together in a hurry. This is something that is already in our back yard. The normal working person can afford this today and have alot of fun. Name: Mark CommentsJust wanted to suggest a correction to the "Upcoming Events Schedule" before a bunch of Super Modified fanatics converge on Berlin Sept. 1st. It's the Auto Value Sprinters running there that night, not ISMA. The Supers will be at Oswego all weekend.... ISMA comes to Berlin at the END of September... Sounds like there's gonna be the sweet smell of methanol in the air all over the place this weekend! Thanks Mark, my bad. Got it now. Thanks. G Name: CommentsGeo I'm sure your right about Chet's family and I can't say as I blame them. They did one hell of a job and will never be forgotten! This would be a huge mess for them to take over. I'm sure they would be talked about until the track closes and will continue to be talked about at other tracks. Having gone to Berlin for the last 30 yrs I sure do miss the good ole days of the Berlin =( Hey one more thing Geo great job on the homepage!!! Looks great! Thanks. Makes it a lot easier when you know if you screw up there is someone you can call to help you fix it. G Name: CommentsPretty strong rumor Berlin going back to primo tires for 08. Pretty strong rumor Berlin reducing schedule for 08. Pretty strong feeling this will do nothing to increase car counts. Name: CommentsMeeuwsen for the win this week Name: CommentsI like the fact that you buy the tickets at the ticket office. I remember sitting in traffic for a half-hour the old way. This is one of the changes I do like. Name: CommentsHey something I have to say about the new bathrooms at Berlin...in April and Sept when its still a lil cool ya can go in bathroom for a few min and warm up lol. OK OK so that really isn't worth the other changes that have been made. Maybe we can recruit Chets family to come back and turn it around!!!!! Good Luck with that. I think they left a good legacy and are happy with the good memories. G Name: CommentsI read on the Berlin site that the Late Models will run the 3035's and 3045's the week after the Boyne race too-and it will be a four tire race. Is this a preview of 2008? Name: Mark #222????? CommentsWho are some of the drivers from Berlin going to be in it? Be in what ? G Name: Commentshow long is that meeting to night 7:00 till ? It gets dark or you get tired. G Name: CommentsYup... nice bathrooms alright. Then there's the Whitecaps other "improvements"... like the five mile walk from where they park you, back to the new ticket building. Under Chet's reign, you bought your tickets and pit passes at the entrance without even having to get out of of your car. Does anybody else miss being able to bring in your own libations? 'Me too. 'Didn't have to buy your beer from the Whitecaps during the Chet years. 'Don't recall Chester cutting the late model purse either, or expecting the drivers to be able to pass each other on tires so hard they throw sparks! At least the 'Caps finally blacktopped the rest of the pits... What? That was just a rumor? Oh wait, that would benefit the participants, NOT provide any additional revenue for the Whitecaps. Silly me. What was I thinkin'? Oh well.. Those are some fine lookin' bathrooms though... Name: Mark CommentsHey "Racer", did you mean ISMA? If so, you're right... that show should draw some folks. 'Matter of fact, I'm leaving all the tire rules, low-car-counts, weight penalties, lack-of-passing, and all the other late model-related controversies in my jet wake this weekend, and flying to Oswego to drink in the Budweiser International Classic for Supermodifieds. Tires wider than they are tall, fuel injected big blocks burning methanol (as well as everybody's eyes), more passing in one lap than I've seen in in any class at any track around here all season, and partyin' that makes Woodstock seem like an ice cream social. It'll be an experience I'll never remember! (yuk yuk) See ya! Name: CommentsMost asphalt tracks are losing Latemodels. The ones that aren't have good promotion and purse in place. The others, well the story is unfolding. I do agree that the Dirt promoters are miles ahead with their rules packages. Dirt tracks seem to protect the rules that keep cars coming from all over, Pavement tracks try to protect a few homers with silly rules and lose the everyone else which results in low car counts. Berlin seems to be in that column. See you there, Mark Mensch #222 Name: Racer CommentsSorry to say but with the shows that are coming up in the month of September, Berlin may just wind up canceling some of their shows, because of lack of cars and butts in the stands. The only show that will bring a big crowd to Berlin this month will be the IMCA show if we don't have rain again this year. Name: Jason Seltzer CommentsWell, we get to go back racing this weekend for what seems like the first time this season! After a rainout, and then a cancellation due to a loss of power, the Kalamazoo Speedway is set to turn em' loose again this Saturday! With two weeks left in the points championships, the racing will heat up for sure. What seemed to be an immeasurable lead in the Outlaw Late Model division, Steve Needles heads into Saturday night with a 13 point lead over 9-time track Champion Andy Bozell. The hottest streak at the racetrack right now belongs to Modified driver Brian Bergakker, winning the last 4 consecutive features, and has a 57 point lead over veteran Harry Foote. Bryan VanZile looks "sporty" with a 162 point lead in the Sportsman division over Trent Hellenga. Greg Haynes leads the Pure Stock points, with a 25 point margin over Lloyd Brooks. With two weeks left to settle the points, the Kalamazoo Speedway is set to host the final (and rescheduled) Autograph Night this Saturday, August 31st. All drivers will be on the front stretch for the fan favorite autograph session to begin at 6 pm. The weather looks great, so make the trip out to Kalamazoo Speedway for some great local short track racing. If you are unable to make it out, go to www.streamnetradio.com and click on Kalamazoo Speedway to listen to Jason Seltzer, Randy Sale, and a couple special guests call the races. Name: CommentsTo the poster below who wants us to complain about the drivers who aren't going to Berlin and that the Whitecaps are doing a great job...you can't be a driver, owner or crew member of any late model at Berlin. I will say the drivers at Berlin probably won't come back UNLESS there are different owners. As a driver you can only be treated like crap for so long, you can only fork out so much money to repair your car so much before you finally say enough is enough. The tire rule is the stupidest thing I've ever seen. I'd say that the amount of money the Late Model drivers have paid out this year they could run any other track for a good 2 yrs any other track before paying this much for repairs. I think the car count at Berlin since 2002 for last weekends race says alot about how things are at Berlin. In 2002-28 drivers, 2003-36 drivers, 2004-40 drivers, 2005-35 drivers, 2006-23 drivers, and in 2007 a whole 14 drivers. Looks to me like its going down hill big time and that's not the drivers fault. Berlin needs to open their eyes and fix things before they loose the rest of them 14! Name: CommentsI don't think that its fair that Dave Lake can only race 3 laps..all he wants is his points.. that's all... I think that you guys should let him race.. there's only a few more races left in the year.. its seriously not fair to Dave or his fans... just my opinion Name: Mark Mensch #222 CommentsI am heading in tonight to get the details on our Go Cart League over at Craig's Cruisers. So tomorrow I will post the information for all of us. I really think this was a great time back in the day of the Great Jodi Johns and Greg Johns. the Masters of the Road Coarse. Hell Even George did pretty good. It would be nice to bring back the old Spirits of Racing like Joe Mazie, and Tim DeVos lol Anyways I'll have the details tomorrow. I think it is as much fun as Arena racing will be, for a much less dollar amount. lol Just playing I am sure the Arena Series will be a great thing to get involved in. I just know I can't afford it. Chat at you all tomorrow, Mark Mensch #222 Name: Pete and Cher CommentsWay To Go Billy Shotko!!!!! Congrats on your first Late Model win! Alot of work and patience has paid off..now go do it again!!!!!!!!!! Your fan in the stands and your fan at your side. :) Name: CommentsThanks. You just made our point for us: If all the regulars still running for points at Berlin show up for the Boyne, there should be around 14 Late Models in the pits. Personnel and schedules. Both those guys are class acts as is Ron Flinn. It is always fun to talk to him. I heard people talking that shouldn't have been about what is going on at the Zoo Name: Racer CommentsWow Late Models are going out the door. Look at what is going on with the 4 cylinders over 30 cars for the race and one Veteran from the Late Models wins it. The Boyne which is a great thing to come but who wants to watch 14 cars battle. Boring Name: CommentsWe want our track back the way Chet ran the show? At least now the fans have nice bathrooms and the facility has been upgraded in many ways. Why can't you look at all the positive things the Whitecaps have done? They aren't perfect - but they do a great job. If you want to complain, complain about the drivers who aren't coming out to the track. If they want the place to get better, they need to be at the track on Saturday nights. Not going isn't going to help! Name: CommentsThe Boyne - another potential wrecked ? We will see. Call of the Wild - gret concept. Come on down and watch the creative guys run. Run what ya brung. Yes !! Name: Randy CommentsI was hoping there was hope for the Boyne then I heard Streval talking to Flynn at the Engine Pro night at the ballpark. No hope. I was thinking 35 to 40 cars. Now 20 to 25 is my guess. I am going to Kalamazoo, at least it sounds like fun. Name: CommentsThat "Call of the Wild" special could be one heckuva show. Talk about shades of the early 80's, when it was pretty much anything goes rules-wise. Don't know if anything will show up that will break Randy's record, but it'll be fun watchin' them try... Name: Gary CommentsThere are only 4 -5 weekends in September, and all tracks are going to be having their year end specials during that same month. Think nothing more than that, Kalamazoo & Berlin work together on their schedules, as well as any two tracks out there. Name: Dan Frazier CommentsKALAMAZOO RACERS SWAP MEET It is still a little early, but I want to let everyone know about this, as fliers will begin being distributed this week as several tracks in Michigan. The Kalamazoo Races Swap Meet will be held on November 10th at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds. The event is planed to be inside the heated Hazel Gray Building. Booth space is limited so please send you entry forms early. We have over 80 booths already, but will attempt to rent more indoor space if they sell out early. Door prizes will be given out at 1pm. We have several sponsors who are donating some very special items for the drawing. For a list of current door prizes and booth info and entry forms please see our web site at www.kalamazooracersswapmeet.com Name: Evan & Austins Chick CommentsHey just wanted to congratulate my cousin Billy on his first late model feature win and first win in about 6 years it has been a long time coming and I am just glad that you finally did it! I am so proud of you and hope that you can do it again soon love you ~Adrianne~ Name: CommentsThe call of the wild will get 100 cars. And some of the baddest Dirt Latemodels with sideboards you have ever seen. The racing will make the Boyne look like a fall color tour parade. Name: CommentsAs for the Boyne race, all the regulars from Berlin will be there that are running for points since this is a double points night I believe. Something I thought was a lil odd is that Gary at K-Zoo is having his Call of the Wild on the 14th of Sept which is the first night for the Boyne. Big conflict of interest there! Even one of Garys employees is pushing the Boyne race and all things Berlin on his website, Call of the Wild is way way down the list. Odd also. Name: CommentsI would like to say way to go to Lee VanDyk from coming to the back to the front to get a top five. Nice job driving. Name: CommentsI think the White Caps will get a clue if we just stop going to the track..Just 14 cars
was not a show.. It's time for the fans and drivers to let them know, WE WANT OUR TRACK
BACK. Name: CommentsMany clues posted below. Berlin just needs to get one. Name: CommentsThis season's dwindling Late Model car count at Berlin is indeed troubling. From what I've gathered in talking with some of the guys in the pits, there are three primary factors behind those low numbers: No money, too many wrecks, and no money. Campbell's car has lost either a front or rear clip pretty much every week, Yonker's car was destroyed in the "big one", Ross M. has missed umpteen shows while on suspension, etc. The list goes on and on. I did hear that we may see Tim Devos back before season's end. 'Matter of fact he would've been back last weekend had those storms not knocked out the power at his shop... 'Not real sure what kind of field we'll see for that Boyne race. If I remember right, not even all the weekly regulars showed up for that thing last year. If that happens this time around, I don't think they're gonna need two nights... OR a last chance race! Name: CommentsA way to get Berlin back to the way it was has to be get rid of the Whitecaps and get a owner/owners who know racing, want to make the fans happy (instead of pocketing all the money and not care what we think), LISTEN to the DRIVERS, CAR OWNERS, TEAMS, treat the drivers with respect instead of having the mind set if you don't like what we're doing tough either deal with it or go some place else we don't need you. We all know someone from Berlin reads Geo's site and with all the bitchin about things at Berlin they don't seem to want to make things better. Granted they put in real bathrooms, and another concessions (money maker for them) and blacktopped part of 4th turn stands and part of parking lots but I personally would go back to how things were and have the racing the way it was when they took it over instead of having the new things. I remember the last yr Chets family still owning the track that you use to sit on either road coming into the track from the east forever due to large crowds. They actually cared though unlike how it is now. Sorry for ramblin Geo! Name: CommentsOwosso had 32 late models - Berlin had 14. What in the world happened to the palace that Chet built? They were running for about the same money(1500/1200). Any clues on how we get Berlin back to something like that? Name: Lorraine Bush CommentsI sit in a hotel room in Tampa, Florida as I write a quick note, as I am on another event assignment. Saturday night - Owosso Speedway, Joe Bush wins! Through the phone lines, I could hear in Joe's voice ... the excitement, the challenge from John Grega, a mindset of calm required at the height of the racing challenge ... and Joe wins! I know Joe said his prayer before the race ... calling on his racing angel. At lap 18, Joe never let up or looked back. Victory lane was his this time. George, John Grega and Joe raced side by side ... cut-off, back-out, regain momentum and charge back. The fans at Owosso saw the best of the best of late model racing. I had to share the spirit of the voice that I heard. It's the good stuff George ... Faith, determination and a commitment to be the best that one can be ... victory lane he achieved. Congratulations to Port City - Harley for giving Joe the best car; and to the Bush crew - Denny, Eric, Ray and Jason who continually dedicate their time week after week. Like I said ... the good stuff. Name: Roger Burton CommentsM-40 Speedway Schedule Updates:
Due to having to bump Ladies Night to the 31st, we have decided to run the Employee Race the very last race of the season on 9/7/07. This will not take anything away from either the Powder Puff race or the Employee Race. So, the 31st will be Ladies Night and the Jonny B. Miller Memorial Race and Sept 7th will be Season Championships, Kid's Night and the 2nd Annual Employee race. Of course, I have great things in store for the Kid's that night! Any questions, please let me know! Should be 2 very fun, action packed nights to round out the season! Name: CHRIS#15 CommentsCONGRATS GO OUT TO BILLY EPPINK, AND CREW. GREAT RUN ON SATURDAY, FIRST TOP FIVE IN A FEW

SHOTKO Name: Sandy CommentsWAY TO GO BILLY AND CREW!!!! You did a wonderful job Sat.nite! We knew you could do it. Name: Stacey CommentsCongrats Shotko on your first win at Berlin! =) Its good to see someone else win it for once other then Tom Thomas!! Name: Ally, A'drn, & Aunt Bird CommentsSHOTKO!!!!! OH MAN!!!! WE'VE BEEN WAITIN' FOR THIS ONE FOR A LOOOOONG TIME!!! YOU DID AWESOME!!! THAT CAR WAS HOOKED UP!!! 7.9 SECOND LEAD!!! WOW!!! WE LOVE YA!!! Name: Comments14 late models at Berlin Saturday night? Yikes! Their efforts to kill off the class are obviously working. Name: Roger Rozema CommentsObservations from Sat. night @ Berlin- 4,500-5,000 fans in the stands. Was J.B. racing? It must have been a special show then. No wait, it was the good weather as suggested on the radio. No? I know, it was the bus races! Maybe the 4 cyl. races! What? It was Kids get in FREE night! Yeah it was crowded, lots of kids running around, lots of noise, etc., but it was GREAT! Even without the scoreboard or P.A. in the 4th turn. Mark, you must not have grandkids. It wasn't as bad as you made it out to be. Try feeding the kids peanuts instead of sweets. It works for us. We made a big mess in the stands, cheered for our favorite drivers, yelled at the officials for some calls, and laughed or butts off a lot too! I really think that it kinda shows that one of the biggest mistakes that management made way back was to make kids half price instead of 5 bucks. The lines at the concessions were long, so any revenue lost at the gate was made up there. Just goes to show, if you make it affordable, they will come. That is not the case with any high price race. Kids free was a great idea. I realize they can't do it all the time, but make it so a family of four can enjoy the races without breaking the bank, and they will come not once, but each and every week cause it's a great value compared to just about any other form of entertainment. The kids of today are the racers and fans of tomorrow Name: CommentsThose numbers were correct: 4,500 out-of-control, ten years and under kids, and 500 adults who kept feeding them sweets. Calgon, take me AWAY! Name: Mark CommentsAlmost forgot... Next season, if anybody hears me talking about heading to Berlin on the same date as their Kids Get In Free special, CHAIN ME TO MY RECLINER and let me listen to the races on the radio!! 'Made the mistake of leaving the pits in favor of watching the features from the stands. Oh my Lord.... That place was like a 10,000 seat day-care center last night! I can understand introducing the youngsters to the sport, but 70% of the kids in the stands were toddlers who won't even remember the experience! Trying to find a place to sit where you weren't getting kicked in the back, getting spilled on, or having people constantly squeezing back 'n forth in front of you was virtually impossible. 'Almost left before witnessing Billy's first win, which fortunately salvaged the evening for us. 'Hate to sound like that crotchety old man down the block, but ZEEZ! Now that is funny stuff. I wondered when I read the paper and it said 5000 fans. That many kids and Bus races too ? I hate it when I skip a night, oh wait. G Name: BB CommentsThanks for the info I needed from Kazoo about the test dates. I went to another site and no info on the Zoo and it was not on their site yet. It was on yours. Thanks, And OK, who is Nick. Nice stuff and only one picture of each car. What a concept. Not 900 or something. I also roamed around the pits last night and found out 99% of the Hero/Autograph cards at Berlin are done by Tim and they are great. Very creative and I didn't see any that had the same format as another. We ordered some for our fans for the end of the year big shows. I didn't have to order a big quantity either. Thanks for that. I just talked to Tim about that last week at the Arena Racing meeting and he is just about ready to unveil his website for Cards and lots more....... I will keep you posted. G Name: Commentsthat was a bad deal Berlin did to Dave Lake saying only run 3 laps and in no competition because their insurance can't cover him and he's been running out there like that for a few weeks now. Name: Mark CommentsYEE HA! It finally happened! Congrats to Billy Shotko on that first feature win! I was sweatin' thru those last five laps like a new daddy outside the delivery room! Great job. 'Hopefully the first of many.....Congratulations to the whole D & B group. They all work together and it was nice to see after all these years. Watch out now, he has tasted it and now he will want more. Good Luck. G Name: Alysia!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(Scottys # 1 fan) CommentsOMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG ~!!!!!!!!!!!!! Nice job to on getting the results and good pictures out to us early. Glad you liked it and I have nothing to do with the info or pics, I am just the guy that posts them. Anyway.......hope there's some racin' this weekend....finally! Name: CommentsMark (222) I have a few people interested in racing go carts in a league. We are from Indiana, but depending on what night it would be, are seriously considering making the commitment. When you have any details, please let us know! Thanks! Name: CommentsTires have and always will be an issue at Berlin. I always thought Chet had a pretty good race program at Berlin. Sure there were problems and issues but his basic weekly shows were good. I am not sure why the White Caps changed the racing program-If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Go back about 8 years ago, let the fans bring their beer in, treat the driver's with some respect and possibly things will get better. Name: CommentsTo find THE last remaining, unbridled, no-two-exactly-alike REAL race cars left in short track racing, one must go beyond the taxi cab ranks and enter the world of the Supermodified. Wanna look at pictures of REAL race cars? Hop on the ISMA website and start clickin'. Now THERE'S some motors, tires, aero tricks, etc, etc, etc... No 970 vs 1080 debates going on among those guys! Thank goodness we get another shot at watching those things blister the blacktop at Berlin the end of the month... Name: wayne forsythe CommentsGeorge thank you for letting us know about Johnny Benson even though you are not posting NASCAR stuff. I think it is very COOL of you. Johnny isn't NASCAR, he is Grand Rapids and when he does well it is nice to see and to recognize. He did a good job. G Name: CommentsThe "Survival of the Late Model As We Know It" theme is nothing new... It was being discussed a great deal on this site at this same time last year. But when everybody showed up for the season openers this spring we were relieved to see fairly decent fields of cars in the pits, and we began to think that our concerns were unwarranted. By mid-season the cars counts had dwindled into the teens at Berlin and now everybody's concerned again... and rightfully so. 'Not sure what kinds of meetings are planned for the off season, but it should be interesting to see if Berlin attempts to remain a "stand alone" race track rules-wise, or conforms more to what most of the other tracks in the area are doing. Name: russrace CommentsThe Alliance rules are body only. Most tracks abide by them. The exceptions are rear panel, spoiler height. The rules that make UMP so competitive are based on tire/weight. Jason your idea sounds good but we currently have Berlin cars at 2600#, Kazoo cars up to 2800#. Seems simple but it's not. The southern tracks have graduated to brick tires the last four years. At 2600# on a decent slick you have horsepower, high dollar shock packages etc Much like we ran at Kazoo on the good Hoosiers years back. These guys Andy listed have been forced to run on harder tires, lower hp levels. The Kazoo/M40 cars are closer to LLM's today. I doubt too many 5" spring cars are running up front at Berlin. Berlin's remaining cars are still closer to the old SLM's and set up to run wicked fast at 2600#. I see from the posts some still think "real racecars" are the answer. I don't know what that description exactly is but if "real racecars" at Berlin and Owosso are the answer I'd hate to be those promoters paying the bills with starting fields barely over 15 cars. Andy, I think everyone you listed has a stake in this deal. I remember the Berlin from the late 70s/early 80's when Ed Howe/Johnny Sr. were battling Kazoo/Galesburg regulars every week. Berlin went more hi-tech the last 15 years and left the rest behind a little bit. If that formula is still working up there It sure doesn't show after reading all the negative posts on this site the last two years. By the way whats this "scared" stuff. Once you conquer that Berlin animal are you coming with us to Eldora to run the Godzilla track? 850hp on 3 wheels at 140 mph...in real racecars.

He thought the 970 would work, and after practicing at Berlin, has some second thoughts. I would LOVE to see all these drivers show up for the Boyne, as I am looking forward to this race, and time will tell. I would LOVE to see all the promoters put $5,000 (for each track) into a fund and then have all the BIG RACES (Intimidator, Sizzler, Klash, Chet, LM Jones, Boyne, Glass City 200 ???, one of the Triple Crown races at Plymouth, etc...) and have a POINTS FUND for the entire summers BIG EVENTS? That is at least 6 different tracks that would pay $30,000 to win the whole series! That would encourage traveling! Name: Mark Mensch CommentsOK Billy I just talked to Jeep from Craig's Cruisers and he says your in. I am looking at starting it the week after Berlin is done. I have a meeting with Paul next Wed. So next Thursday I have all the details for everyone. Mark Mensch #222 Name: CommentsPonstein you are probably right on the 50 car dream. All of those names on your list just spent the summer racing for $10,000-$30,000 to win in not real racecars on 970's. Why would they come to spend $1200 on 12 slicks for the weekend for a petty cash purse? Name: Mark CommentsAwesome post Andy... You're so right... Berlin got a surprising number of "strange" faces and cars in the pits for the Chet, and that race was run on slicks, not on 970's. (Granted, they were slicks that made foundation bricks seem soft 'n sticky, but what the heck.) If Mike's gonna put together a big event for super late models, let 'em be REAL late models running on on REAL racing tires! Then again, that one-weekend-only, level-playing-field idea with the 970's at that place might be fun to! Name: Andy Ponstein CommentsWow, alot of opinions on the tire issue from people that either have no stake, or will not sign their name. After racing at Kazoo on the 970's, I was in full favor of them at Berlin. BUT, after practicing on them at Berlin, I am not so sure. Berlin, as one poster stated, is its own animal. If you are going to have a SLM race that pays good money ($7500 to win) such as the Boyne, and the past teaches us that racers from M-40, New Paris, Plymouth, and these other tracks are not going to come even if we raced on Bicycle tires because they are not only scared of the race track but of the regulars, then lets make the race for real race cars. I bet Sexton will come back, so will Senneker, so will Sensiba, etc. I think it very "pie in the sky" to believe that with the 970 there will be 50 cars. If it is true then lets do it and I issue a challenge to all these late model guys whom I consider not only my competition but friends, and say come on up. The locals are on a different tire than they have raced all year, so your shot is now. Comon, Doering, Sauve, Felver, Bozell, Roahrig, Vochaska, Ganus, Needles, Spaulding etc. and race!!! if they all came plus more it would be a great show no matter what tire we are on. Thanks, and Mike, Great Move. Name: CommentsHey "russrace", I keep asking this question but get no response: Wasn't there a very promising attempt to standardize the Superlate rules in the Midwest a few years ago, called the Late Model Alliance? For a season or two it seemed to be helping the situation, but I never hear the term mentioned anymore. Did everybody just sort of drift away from them and start doing their own thing again? Name: CommentsThe Supers are dead at tracks with slicks, the Outlaws are well alive on tracks with 950-970 tires. Just the facts, look at the numbers. Over 100 different cars for Klash-Jones-Sizzler-Plymouth specials. A few tracks need to smell the coffee before it goes stale. Name: Rob Gray 17g CommentsThe west side is not the only area having problems with car counts as evident by Owosso shortening the Triple Crown and making other rule changes. Spartan also is considering running the 970 tire in the SLM class. It is a shame that this is the way that the Outlaw SLM class is heading but it's happening. I don't know if the days of the wide sticky tires are completely over but it's close. I do agree with standardized rules track to track as well as a unified tire rule. Name: Commentsface it, late model is doomed to become extinct within a couple of years. I base that thought because of what the track owners and the economy is doing. Plain and simple, the handwriting is on the wall.... please take your seats gentlemen, the fat lady is about to sing. Isn't that Gentlemen, please stand and remove your hats ? - I think you are a little premature, but we will see. G Name: Billy Eppink CommentsHay Mark you get the ok and I'd be back there racing again it was a blast. It was a good time even for an old guy. I meant your Dad. G Name: russrace CommentsNone of the Superlate teams want to see these cars on treaded tires but we better all start looking at how we save these Outlaw cars. No one has mentioned one factor that has been very apparent the last few years...todays tire compounds are very suspect when compared to what we had a few short years ago. If we are running 13.0's on 1080 slicks at Kazoo and 13.10's on 970's it hardly holds up to argue these cars need to be on a slick. Looking at Berlin's times I'd bet a top 5 Latemodel on four new 970's would time in within a few tenths of their current slick and the racing would produce more passing than they are seeing lately. I agree with Andy that economies can recycle but I think the days of $$$ Latemodels at the local level are gone due to rising costs. Berlin/Kazoo produced during the late 90's/early 2000-2003 probably the most competitive local racing in the nation. Few ASA,Sunoco,Hooters, or even top NASCAR shoes could come into those tracks and win. The problem is in order to keep those tracks that competitive you need 15-20 well funded teams to show weekly. Few tracks nationwide can boast that in today's world. As far as the Boyne show, if it were my call I would gamble on the 970 to see how many teams it could attract to Berlin. Berlin has some great teams but it's been ten years since many outsiders have ventured up there. These pavement promoters need to decide if they intend to protect a few or ride the path of the dirt tracks and come up with standardized rules that attract cars from all over. We have changed our car several times this year alone to meet various rules and it's getting pretty old, especially when we have two UMP dirtlates parked next to it that can be loaded and legal at any Dirt track coast to coast. It's time for the same tire for all asphalt Outlaw LM's and rule packages standard for every track. How can tracks that only have 12-14 points regulars not see this? Name: CommentsIf the 970 is worse than the 1080 why have Kazoo,M40,Angola,New Paris tracks adopted it and had more cars for weekly and special shows than Berlin has seen in years? The 970 lap times at Kazoo are about the same as last years slick. The main reason the Berlin/Kazoo SLM guys don't like the 970/1080 is they have about 75-100 hp under the hood they can't use anymore. Kazoo killed them off even more by making the Berlin guys add 200# and Kazoo's SLM cars 100#! Class combine? The Kazoo LLM's were already Latemodels. Full tube clip, Penske shocks, Quickchange, $4000 Outlaw bodies on some. A few top Kazoo 2007 LM's are former LLM's. Kazoo tried ABC class they are down to 15 cars. What Michigan track is trending towards a successful ABC class? Run the Boyne on 970's and get over 50 cars and then let the few remaining slick only teams make the argument for 2008 tire rules. Name: CommentsGlad to see the Boyne racing on a real tire. A real tire=a real race. Plus, maybe this will enable someone to stop the Thomas domination. Name: Tim Horvath II CommentsThe Arena Racing Deal Is Tonight at 7 p.m. Tim Horvath II Horvath Design Name: CommentsRunning the Boyne on last years tire won't solve the problem. Dozens of LM's have dozens of 970's in their stable ready to show up and practice for a chance to run Berlin. Berlin is protecting a few remaining Supers but the ship is sinking. Why wouldn't you run the tire that 90% of the LM in the area are now on? They are going to have 12 cars next year if they don't see the light. Name: Mark Mensch CommentsI see the Arena Racing is getting Press about how much the cost is. Here is a great idea that doesn't cost very much money at all. GO CART RACING this Fall indoors at Craig's Cruiser's. I am setting up to meet with Jeep this week to get this series up and running again. I and even going to plead with Jeep to allow Billy Epink to drag his head along the rails for better traction. LMAO!!! but i will have an answer very soon. Mark #222 Name: CommentsI talked to a few of the LM guys, (Dave Sensiba, Terry Senneker Jr., Jamie Gritter) and they thought the 970 was worse than the 1080, it had less bite. Berlin is such a unique race track that it will take some serious tire testing adn research, the proper tire will probably not be and easy task. Name: CommentsThe reason Kazoo has the decent car counts the previous poster mentioned, is because they blended their Limited Late rules into their Late Model class. Same thing would happen at Berlin if they folded their Super Stock suspension and tire rules into the Late Model division, but left the body rules alone. Trouble is, in this day and age the trend is towards template bodies and away from the outlaw cars... Kiss innovation and progress goodbye... the cars and haulers and etc. at MIS, and head to Bristol and then come back next Tuesday
to run at MIS. Most of the teams have more then one hauler anyway, and most teams use
different cars at Bristol then they do at other tracks anyway, so sounds like a solid plan
to me? Plus NASCAR and Homestead wouldn't be happy if the last race was here in Michigan,
and who wants to go to a race in the cold and maybe even in the SNOW?????? And for me and
many others, it's one of the best week ends, of the already to short, two weeks of gun

They can't be much worse than those bricks they're runnin' on right now, and it may entice a few out-of-towners to show up. Lord knows there weren't any up there last year... I noticed in the schedule of events for that shindig that they plan on running both Friday and Saturday nights, AND that they're even advertising a last chance race! Does anybody REALLY think they're gonna need one of those with twenty cars in the pits? I see that like Owosso, Toledo had to cut back their biggest late model event of the year (the Glass City) to only one day due to not enuff butts in the stands on Friday night. 'Just a shame how things are going in that division these days. Name: Brian CommentsThe same problem the effects late models is effecting the Arena Series. $$$$$$$$$. From NASCAR.com - If weather precludes the Michigan race from being run this week, it would be rescheduled for the weekend after Thanksgiving. That would mean the Chase drivers would be decided not Sept. 8 at Richmond, but Sept. 16 at New Hampshire. Name: CommentsOn the death of Late Models__it doesn't take a brain scientist to figure out that until pavement promoters copy the dirt guys and quit assigning "track specific" tires the class will die out. Look at the tracks down south like the Zoo, M40, New Paris, on the same tire--no problem with car counts. The poster who asked about the Klash losing 20 cars. It's because they decided to add 100# penalty to dry sumps even though wet sump cars like THE #46 have run up front there for 2 years. The Zoo got it half right, now they need to drop everyone to the same weight. Berlin needs to realize full blown Late Models on slicks are history. They knew what the vehicles were and knew what type of safety equipment (or lack of) that were in these vehicles. And to use your quote: "And the drivers don't volunteer, they are asked by the track". If the track isn't telling them that they are to run in that race, then it IS volunteering. Again the event was extremely unfortunate, but to blame the incident solely on the track is like dumping coffee on your leg and suing because you got burned. Luckily, in this case, no one was killed. However, I do appreciate you twisting my words to make me look ignorant. I apologize to all the posters that had to read this drivel, but the original poster left no information for me to respond directly. G Name: Andy Ponstein CommentsJust my take, but I don't think the problems in late model racing are any one thing. First you have an economy which has severely limited not only racers disposable cash but also the fans. Fewer fans equals less revenue for the track and less ability to pay the racers. Less pay equals less racers, especially in the most expensive of classes. But look, do you see any class growing??? No ! You see a race track has two distinct groups of customers, the fans and the racers. The fans come to see the racers and the racers come to be supported by the race track. When either side goes down so does the other. I believe like the economy it is cyclical and it will come back I just don't know when. Lets hope the slide stops and folks have a chance to recoup and next year will start us on the road back to full pits and grandstands, but it is going to take a lot of work from promoters to lure the fans back, the racers will return in bigger numbers if the sponsors are willing to help with bigger commitments if there is a growing economy.
